Ways to Claim Social Security

If you have earned enough work credits–at least 40–and you are at least 62 years of age, you can begin claiming your Social Security retirement benefits anytime that you want. However, just because you can start benefits as early as 62 doesn’t necessarily mean that you should start benefits. In fact, in many cases, waiting until you reach full retirement age or later is better. Here’s what you need to know about how your benefits will be affected by the age at which you claim Social Security—

  • If you claim at age 62 (or anytime before reaching full retirement age)…. If you claim your benefits starting at age 62, this can pose benefits and disadvantages. The obvious benefit is that you get to start receiving a monthly benefit check; the disadvantage is that this check will be reduced in order to account for the number of months that you are claiming benefits before reaching full retirement age.
  • If you wait until full retirement age… Another option that you have is to wait until you reach full retirement age, which is sometime between 66 and 67 for most, depending upon the year you were born. If you wait until full retirement age, you will receive 100 percent of your benefit amount. This is a good way to ensure that you get the full benefit amount to which you are entitled.
  • If you wait until after full retirement age… The third option that you have is to wait until after full retirement age, up until age 70, to begin claiming your benefits. The downside to this is that from age 62 to age 70 (or whenever you start claiming benefits), you will not receive a monthly benefit check, which could pose financial complications for you and your family. The good news, however, is that the longer that you wait to claim benefits, the greater your benefit amount is.
