As you age and begin to think about your retirement years, you may have a lot of questions regarding Social Security benefits, and how Social Security can be claimed. The answer is that there is no single way to claim Social Security benefits, nor only one benefit type. If you live in Highland, we urge you to sign up for one of our free Social Security workshops to learn more. In the meantime, here is some information about how Social Security can be claimed–
One of the ways that Social Security benefits can be claimed is by waiting until you reach full retirement age. Your full retirement age is based on the year in which you were born. For example, for those born between the years of 1943 and 1954, the full retirement age is 64. Many people choose to begin claiming their benefits when they reach full retirement age because doing so guarantees that you will receive 100 percent of your monthly benefit amount.
Two other possible avenues for claiming Social Security are to wait until age 70, which is the latest age at which benefits may be claimed, or to begin claiming Social Security benefits at age 62, which is the earliest age at which benefits may be claimed. Both have benefits depending upon your circumstances, although the biggest benefit to waiting to claim benefits is that the longer you wait to claim benefits, the greater your monthly benefit amount will be.
Another way that you can claim Social Security benefits is in the case that you suffer a disability. If you become disabled and are therefore unable to work as as direct result of that disability, you have the right to seek Social Security Disability Insurance (SSDI) if you have earned enough work credits and if your disability has lasted, or is expected to last, for at least 12 months or result in death. Your dependents can also receive Social Security disability benefits on your record.
You also have the options, in some cases, to claim benefits on the record of your spouse or your ex-spouse. This is true when you are at least 62 years old, your spouse/ex-spouse is eligible to begin claiming benefits, and, if you are divorced, you have not remarried and the marriage lasted for at least 10 years.
